Fix outside of chroot compilation problems

The stock Ubuntu 12.04 gcc throws stack protection failure warnings
when encountering local arrays smaller than 4 bytes in size.

Fix this by explicitly increasing the arrays in question to four bytes
or use a pointer to a byte instead of defining a one byte array.

BUG=None
TEST=manual
  . observed that the package still builds and runs inside chroot and
    does not fail to build outside of chroot anymore.
