LeakTraceObject carries the id in a new objectId
property, and only the rendering reads it: the leak fingerprint is still
built from class and reference names, so it doesn't change. The
serialVersionUID is bumped so that an analysis serialized before this fails
to deserialize, rather than reading back an id of 0.

The leakcanary-app leak screen printed the leaking object on every row of
the path instead of that row's own object, which would have printed the same
id down the whole trace. The LeakCanary activity shares its hex helper with
its heap explorer, which had a private copy.

Android Studio's on-device parser of leak traces expects the last word of
that line to be the type, so it needs updating for this as it already does
for `Verdict:`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
"

So every object
above the 2 GB mark of an Android heap dump got a negative id,
0xffffffff82000010 for the object at 0x82000010.

Nothing else spells it that way. Android Studio, ahat, MAT, jhat and
VisualVM all show that object as 0x82000010, and ahat and MAT find
nothing given the 16 digits. Several workarounds grew around the
negative ids: HeapObject.positiveObjectId, hex helpers that mask the
low 32 bits back off, and in Shark Dive a second, exact spelling for
its files, two readings of every address typed into a note, and a
range check instead of a sign check to tell a pile from an object.

Every reader of an id now reads it unsigned, which removes all of
those. The in-memory index stores ids as offsets from the smallest one,
so its keys are unchanged and so are the numbers of the perf tests.
HprofWriter now refuses an id that doesn't fit the heap dump's id size
instead of writing its low bytes, which would read back as a different
id now.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Use bytesize 2.3.0, type Retained.heapSize as DecimalByteSize

#2711 pinned the 2.0.0-beta04 prerelease because every stable bytesize
2.x release carries Kotlin 2.2 metadata, which the Kotlin 1.9.25 that
LeakCanary built with then could not read. LeakCanary builds with Kotlin
2.4 since #2841, so this moves to 2.3.0. Since beta04, bytesize also
stopped rendering sizes below -1000 bytes in scientific notation
("-1.7949673E9 B" rather than "-1.79 GB"), which a negative
`retainedIncrease` could reach.

`Retained.heapSize` is typed as the concrete `DecimalByteSize` rather
than the `ByteSize` sealed interface. Shark only ever means decimal
bytes, so the signature says so, and a value class whose static type is
an interface is boxed on every read.

That typing is also what lets 2.3.0's same-precision overloads apply
(saket/byte-size#24). `DecimalByteSize - DecimalByteSize` resolves to an
inline subtraction of two longs instead of the `ByteSize` operator,
which boxed both operands. HotSpot scalar replaces those boxes, ART
doesn't: on an Android 14 arm64 device the interface operator allocated
32 bytes per call. With 2.3.0, the compiled shark classes contain no
`DecimalByteSize.box-impl` outside the `sortedByDescending` comparator
over reported growing nodes, which boxed the old `shark.ByteSize` the
same way.

`shark.api` is regenerated: `shark.ByteSize` is gone, and `Retained`'s
mangled names change, so this breaks binary compatibility even for
callers that never named `ByteSize`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Wait for cleared WeakHashMap entries to leave the pending list before dumping

`WeakHashMap with cleared key doesn't take over the path to its value` failed
on CI three times today, on three branches, with the leak trace going from a
JNI global root through `Reference.discovered` to the cleared entry, or
starting at the entry itself, and from there to its value.

That root is the VM's reference pending list. A collection puts everything it
cleared on that list, and the Reference Handler thread moves each reference to
its queue some time later. HotSpot dumps the VM's global handles as JNI global
roots, the head of that list among them, so a heap dump taken in between can
reach the entry's value from the root in one or two references, where the
path the test expects takes seven. clearWeakKeys() was a bare System.gc(), so
whether the handler got there before the dump came down to scheduling, which a
loaded CI runner loses.

Holding the Reference Handler back for 300 ms reproduces it every time: 10
rounds out of 10 failed, with both shapes seen on CI. clearWeakKeys() now waits
for the handler: 10 rounds out of 10 passed, each waiting about 320 ms for a
handler held back 300 ms.

It waits for two sentinels, one per collection, because the handler takes a
collection's whole list at once. The first sentinel coming out of its queue
only says the list it was on has been taken. The second can only come out
once the handler is through the first list, so by then the entries have gone
to the map's own queue, which is a longer path from the root than the one the
test expects.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Print a thread's native roots as <Native Local> in a leak trace

Shark reads a thread's JNI_LOCAL and NATIVE_STACK roots as references from
that thread, the way it reads its JAVA_FRAME roots, and they all printed as
<Java Local>. Someone reading a trace through native code was told a Java
method held the object, and would go looking for a variable that isn't there.

So ReferenceLocationType and LeakTraceReference.ReferenceType each get a
NATIVE_LOCAL constant, which JavaLocalReferenceReader uses for the native
roots, and which prints as <Native Local>. A Java frame is still LOCAL and
still <Java Local>, so no existing leak signature changes. The native roots
only started reaching a leak trace through their thread since the last
release, so no released signature changes either.

The new constants are appended rather than placed beside LOCAL, which keeps
every existing ordinal. Nothing in the repo reads one, but a consumer might
have persisted one.

An exhaustive `when` over either enum needs a branch for the new constant,
which is the breaking part. Android Studio's on-device LeakCanary task parses
reference lines and only recognizes <Java Local>, so it can't parse a trace
with <Native Local> in it.
Read a thread's JNI_LOCAL and NATIVE_STACK roots as references from it

Shark reads what Java code running on a thread holds, its JAVA_FRAME roots, as
low priority LOCAL references from the Thread, and drops those roots, so a leak
trace goes through any other path first and names the thread when it doesn't.
JNI_LOCAL and NATIVE_STACK roots name their thread by serial number the same
way, and were read as GC roots with no priority, so a leak trace started at one
whenever that was the shortest path.

Production leak reports show it: over 90 days of a large app, 14 reports
started at a NATIVE_STACK root holding the PathClassLoader, then went through
the class loader to an app class and its static field. In the one heap dump of
those still stored, the root is on the JIT compiler thread, which held the
class loader while compiling a class. The leak trace now starts at
ConnectivityThread.contextClassLoader and keeps its fingerprint, since every
object in the part that changed is expected.

Across that dump and every heap dump in the repo, leak and unreachable counts
are the same, and every JNI_LOCAL and NATIVE_STACK root has a thread object.

A javaLocal() matcher now covers native code on its thread too, so the main
thread's native roots are ignored by default, as its Java frames are. That is
the whole of the HprofIOPerfTest change: 1 to 6 fewer reads per dump, and
reading the main thread's native roots as references again gives back the old
numbers exactly. It is also why the MessageQueue leak of
gc_root_in_non_primary_heap.hprof now starts at
ActivityThread.sMainThreadHandler instead of at the queue the main thread holds
while it waits in nativePollOnce, so that test now checks the reference into
the message.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Refuse ways_held for uncollected garbage

ways_held is every way an object is held, and nothing holds garbage in
memory: the ways it found for one started at pieces of garbage, the same
non-path path_from_gc_roots stopped showing.
Rename Shark Dive's NO_PATH investigation state to UNREACHABLE

NO_PATH was for a path with no steps, and no agent tool could ever be
answered with one. The only ids rootPathTo returns no steps for are the
ones the tree has no node for: the whole heap dump, a pile, an object
folded into another one. requireOneObjectOf refuses all of them before a
path is read. Every node has a path. Measured over every object of the
eight heap dumps in the repo: no node had an empty path, and no node was
anything but an object.

So the two branches of the path walk that logged and returned nothing
now throw: a node that is no object, and a node the search can't reach
from a root. Both would mean the tree and the referrer index were built
differently. The window's "No path from a GC root reaches it." goes too,
since it could only be shown for a path with no steps.

UNREACHABLE is what the state means now: no GC root holds the object, so
it is uncollected garbage, which subsumes the special case UNSOLVED had
for a garbage path whose top object is stuck. set_verdict refuses a
solvingLeakOf of garbage the same way, since there is no leak to solve.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Fold Shark Dive's unsolved investigation states into one UNSOLVED

An agent's `investigation` had six states, and three of them said the same
thing or could not happen.

NOTHING_EXPECTED_ABOVE and NARROWED both mean the verdicts don't name the
faulty reference yet, and an agent does the same thing next in both: settle the
objects between the last expected one and the first stuck one, from the top of
the path when nothing is expected. Since a GC root holding a stuck object
solves a leak on its own, nothing expected above a stuck object is no reason to
look further up either, which was the case for keeping it apart. And NARROWED
was an odd name for where every investigation starts, before any verdict has
narrowed anything. Both are UNSOLVED now.

REFERENCE_UNREADABLE was a path whose stuck object was reached through no
reference, which `stepTo` handed back when reading the referrer again didn't
find the reference the walk went through. It can't: the referrer index the
walk follows was built with the same reader `stepTo` reads, so the reference is
always there. It was never seen in a run log. `stepTo` now throws instead, and
the fallbacks downstream of it are gone.

The one unsolved path with nothing to settle is a stuck object at the top of
uncollected garbage, which no GC root reaches. It says so instead of listing no
objects to decide about.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Fix DecorContext keeping the activity a preserved window was created for

On Android 10, an activity relaunched with its window preserved reuses
the DecorView of the destroyed activity, and that DecorView's
DecorContext keeps a weak reference to the destroyed activity, which
DecorContext.setPhoneWindow() doesn't update. DecorView.getResources()
reads that reference on every call, and a reference read while the GC
is marking keeps its referent alive, so the destroyed activity survives
garbage collections while the window draws. LeakCanary reports it as
retained, then finds no strong path to it in the heap dump. Android 11
fixed it by replacing the reference in setPhoneWindow().

Android 10 preserves the window when an overlay the app uses changes,
which relaunches every activity of the app (navigation mode, accent
color, or an overlay a device enables at runtime), and when an activity
is resized in multi-window mode.

DecorContext's fields are on the Android 10 blocklist, but PhoneWindow
builds the DecorContext from Window.getContext(), and the field behind
it, Window.mContext, is greylisted. The new DECOR_CONTEXT fix sets that
field to a ContextWrapper of the activity while the activity is created,
which is when the DecorView is created, then sets it back and keeps the
wrapper reachable from a DecorView tag. When an activity is created with
a preserved window, the fix points the wrapper's base context, also
greylisted, at the new activity.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Fix InputMethodManager.mImeInsetsConsumer holding a removed window

From Android 11 to Android 15, InputMethodManager.mImeInsetsConsumer is
set to a window's IME insets consumer when that window gains focus.
ViewRootImpl.handleWindowFocusChanged() makes that call before checking
whether the window is still added, and removing a window doesn't remove
its queued MSG_WINDOW_FOCUS_CHANGED. So a dialog dismissed while its
focus gain is still queued, which happens when it's shown and dismissed
while the main thread is busy, gets its consumer registered after it's
gone. When the activity's own focus gain ran first, the dialog's wins,
and InputMethodManager holds the removed ViewRootImpl until another
window gains focus.

The new IMM_IME_INSETS_CONSUMER fix removes the queued focus change
messages of a window as its root view is detached. Android 16 doesn't
register these consumers anymore, as its release configuration enables
the refactor_insets_controller flag, so the fix only applies to API 30
to 35.

The library leak description said the field isn't cleared when the
activity is destroyed, which isn't what happens: the activity is still
alive, and what's held is a dialog that was dismissed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Report the app's version code in the heap dump metadata

Shark Dive said the app's own version number is in no heap dump, and
that BuildConfig constants never reach the heap. Neither is true. Every
heap dump in this repository has the bound ApplicationInfo at
ActivityThread.sCurrentActivityThread.mBoundApplication.appInfo, from
API 19 to API 31, and on every one from API 22 on it carries the app's
version code: gcroot_unknown_object.hprof reads 1564579130. Five of the
ten load a BuildConfig class too, three of them the app's own.

ApplicationInfo.versionCode is a hidden field added in API 21. API 28
added longVersionCode, which also carries the manifest's
versionCodeMajor, and since then setVersionCode() keeps versionCode as
its low 32 bits. So the new ApplicationInfo.versionCode key reads
longVersionCode when the heap dump has it. A test checks that on a built
dump: the one real dump from API 28 or later, safe_iterable_map.hprof,
is in shark's tests, which can't see shark-android.

The version name is not part of ApplicationInfo. It's only in a heap
dump the app kept a PackageInfo in or loaded its own BuildConfig into,
which is five of the ten (two of them with the strings stripped), so the
help now says it isn't in the metadata rather than that it's in no heap
dump, and still tells agents to ask which release a version code is.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Write object ids in hex wherever Shark writes one

Leak trace labels, HeapObject.toString(), error messages, the CLI and LeakCanary's heap explorer
wrote an object id in decimal: `instance @314615480 of com.example.Foo`. Heap dump viewers write an
address in hex, and so does Shark Dive, which turns `0x12c0a6b8` into a link to the object. A
decimal id was a number neither of them could find.

A negative id is written as its low 32 bits. A 32 bit heap dump records 4 byte ids and shark widens
them by sign, so an object above the 2 GB mark would otherwise read `0x-7deb3000`. Shark Dive's
hexObjectId already follows that rule. Each module has its own copy of the few lines, rather than a
public shark API for them.

The CLI's interactive mode reads the id after `@` as hex, since that is how it now prints one.

Leak signatures don't change. An id only reaches the name of an array entry, and a signature uses
`[x]` for those.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Say verdict throughout Shark Dive

`LeakStatus`, `leakStatus` and `leakStatusReason` are now `Verdict`,
`verdict` and `verdictReason`, in the enum, the window, the agent surface
and the files on disk. One concept had two spellings depending on which
side of the process it was read from, and a person watching an agent work
has to be able to say the same thing about the same object as the agent.

The files moved with the name: verdicts are in `~/.shark-dive/verdicts` as
`<dump>.verdicts.tsv`, where they were `~/.shark-dive/leak-statuses` and
`.leak-statuses.tsv`. A file written under the old name goes unread, which
a rename brings back — this app is an alpha and these are three columns of
text.

Three more things came out of reading the same surface.

A leak group no longer names a representative object. It was documented as
the object whose own path produced the group's references, and it was
`objects[0]` every time: the candidates are sorted by retained size before
any path is walked and Kotlin's sort is stable. So it cost an agent a
decision with one answer. The tool description now says any object of the
group solves the group, and `AgentToolsTest` asserts that sentence is there
rather than only that the field is gone.

`ObjectContent` replaces the `headline: String?` that four model types
carried. A string's characters, a bitmap's dimensions and recycled flag and
a thread's name are facts, while "420 × 467 pixels, recycled" is a window's
sentence on a surface a program also reads. The model carries the facts and
`ObjectContent.headline` draws them for the window.

Every help page this command line prints now wraps at one width, with every
line of a multi-paragraph description indented. The synopsis stays long: it
is the line somebody copies.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
"

An agent reading help written that way learns the house style of
the surface it is about to answer on, so it is not only a reading cost.

The problem turned out not to be lexical. A 49,688 character corpus of
every string this module prints contains zero instances of delve, crucial,
robust, leverage, seamless, comprehensive, realm, landscape, testament or
underscore. So the guidance added here names shapes rather than words,
which is also the half that holds across model eras: the vocabulary lists
go stale, and the one word with a published frequency study behind it did
not replicate across registers.

--help is 5144 to 4984 characters, with Markdown emphasis 2 to 0 and em
dashes 4 to 0. --leak-investigation-help is 11855 to 10652, with emphasis
62 to 0, em dashes 17 to 3, triadic negations 3 to 0, and sentences over
25 words 34 to 20. The three remaining em dashes are the definitions in
the EXPECTED, STUCK and UNKNOWN bullets, which is what the character is
for. Em dashes were reduced by rewriting the sentences that needed one,
not hunted as a character: the claim that they are a tell is weaker than
it is usually stated, and the guidance says so with the source.

One test assertion moves, for a phrase that became the start of a
sentence and so gained a capital.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
"

The
reason was sound — the list is written whole, so saving one worked out
from a file nobody has read yet takes the star off everything that was
in it — but refusing is the wrong answer to it, because the thing that
is unknown is knowable: take the lock, read, and then write what the
read says.

Nothing but a test is fast enough to hit this. The window starts the
read as a heap dump opens (HeapDumpDive.kt:622) and a person reaches a
star seconds later, so the click that lands first is one something drove.
That is how it showed up: DiveAppTest's "taking the star off the last
object is the working set gone" timed out on a loaded CI runner in run
37191639482 and nowhere else, over three clean local runs and one under
eight CPU hogs.
Delete conclude, and let the heap dump say when a leak is solved

`conclude` took the faulty reference as an argument and refused until the
verdicts on the path left exactly one candidate, which read as the one refusal
worth having. It wasn't. The reference it checked is one the surface had already
handed over — a path answers with `faultyReference` the moment the verdicts
narrow to one, and the refusal before that lists the candidates — so the check
compared the tool's own derivation against a copy of it, and the eval column it
fed was scoring transcription.

So the job is restated as what it always was: an agent settles the state of the
objects it can settle, and Shark Dive says when one reference is left.
`RootPath.isLeakSolved()` is that fact and `leakSolvingProgress()` is how far off
it is, both read off the verdicts rather than claimed by anybody. What replaces
the refusal is the answer carrying the distance — `set_verdict` takes
`solvingLeakOf`, the stuck object the verdict is in service of, and answers with
the candidate count and the progress on both sides of it, so a verdict that ruled
nothing out and a verdict that halved the search no longer read the same.

`list_leaks` becomes `list_leak_groups`, which is what it has answered with since
grouping went in, and each group now names the `representativeObject` to work it
through and carries the leak trace LeakCanary prints, so an agent matches a trace
it was handed rather than retelling one. `chain_from_gc_root` becomes
`path_from_gc_root`, the industry word, and "chain" meaning a root path is now
"path" everywhere — the window, the docs, the notes.

`outcomeOfTool` reads the reference off the two answers that can carry one, and
only when the same answer says `leakSolved`, so a build that changed one half
without the other records nothing rather than something wrong. The eval's
`REFUSED` outcome goes with the tool; what it measured is `NOT_SOLVED` plus the
refusal count beside it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Say Verdict: Stuck / Expected where a leak trace said Leaking: YES / NO

A leak trace carries a verdict on each object: whether it is meant to
still be in memory. It printed that as `Leaking: YES`, `NO` and
`UNKNOWN`, a dozen times down one trace, and the wording points at the
wrong thing. A leak is one faulty reference, the one that should have
been cleared, and everything below it is in memory because of that
single mistake — so calling all twenty of those objects "leaking" sends
a reader looking at the twenty rather than at the one thing to fix.

`Stuck` says the object should be gone and something is holding it,
which is the question worth asking, without accusing the object of
being the bug. `Expected` says its being in memory is legitimate at
this point in the app's life, which is what an inspector recognizes.
The pair is deliberately not antonyms: an object in use can't be
collected either, so the good side has to answer a different question
than "can it leave".

Shark Dive picked these three words and shipped them, and the session
that did scoped itself to that window — not as a decision anyone took,
but because that was how the task had been asked. It then wrote "the
identifiers didn't move" into notes/decisions.md as though it had been.
Two vocabularies for one verdict is the thing that section argues
against, and the cost showed up as soon as a reader moved between a
leak trace and that window. So the words go down into Shark, and the
same object gets the same word everywhere.

Breaking, and knowingly so:

- `LeakTraceObject.LeakingStatus` is `Verdict`, `LEAKING` /
 `NOT_LEAKING` are `STUCK` / `EXPECTED`, `UNKNOWN` keeps its name.
- `leakingStatus` / `leakingStatusReason` are `verdict` /
 `verdictReason`.
- `ObjectReporter.leakingReasons` / `notLeakingReasons` are
 `stuckReasons` / `expectedReasons`, which every custom
 `ObjectInspector` adds to.
- Java serialization writes field names and enum constant names, so a
stored analysis would deserialize with a null verdict on a non-null
property. `serialVersionUID` is bumped so it fails instead, and
LeakCanary's database goes to version 27, recreating rather than
migrating. The incremental migrations below it go with it: they only
ever rewrote blobs this version can no longer read.
- Android Studio's Profiler parses `Leaking: (YES|NO|UNKNOWN)` out of
 logcat in its on device mode. That one breaks until Studio updates;
its host side mode, which analyzes the dump with its own bundled
Shark, is untouched. AndroidStudioProfilerContractTest says why the
printed format is deliberately not pinned there.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Say why the reasoning text is missing, having pinned the model

The first version of this blamed `--print` on an experiment that never pinned a
model, which is not sound: `--model opus` resolves to claude-opus-5-5, so an
unpinned run measures the alias. Pinning claude-opus-5 settles it — a `--print`
run records 0 characters, while that same model in a session that is not
`--print` recorded 47 blocks of 47 with text, median 699 characters, on the same
client version and the same entrypoint.

Names the mechanism rather than the symptom: this is the API's thinking
`display: "omitted"`, empty blocks carrying only the encrypted signature,
against the `"summarized"` a non-print session gets. Records that `--effort max`
and MAX_THINKING_TOKENS change nothing, both measured, so the next reader
doesn't retry them.

And that a populated block is a summary written by a different model rather than
the reasoning, which the signature carries and nothing here can read — so a
transcript is an account of how an agent thought, never the audit log of it.
Upstream treats the empty blocks as a bug and it has moved with client version
before, so this says to re-measure rather than trust it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Follow a harness run's calls as it makes them

start-harness.sh printed two things about a run: the agent's final answer, and
where the Shark Dive log is. Neither shows a run that never arrived. Measured
here: a run launched the bundle with `open -a`, made no --cli call at all, and
finished by describing the kinds of leak it would have found — an empty agent
log beside an answer that reads like a success.

The client writes every call and every result to a transcript as it goes, so
watch-transcript.sh follows that, in the terminal or through claude-code-log in
a browser. Both ways of starting a run print it with the run's own directory
filled in, since harness directories accumulate and the newest is the right
answer only until a second run starts.

Which file it is has to be knowable before the run exists, so the session id is
pinned with --session-id rather than left to the client, and written to
session-id.txt beside the prompt. The lookup globs for that id instead of
building a path: the client keys its projects directory on the physical working
directory, and $TMPDIR here is a symlink into /private/var, so a computed path
is right on Linux and wrong on this machine. A run staged before this change has
no id to find, and falls back to the newest transcript in its own configuration
directory, which is sound because that directory is staged per run.

The reasoning text is not in any of it. A --print run records thinking blocks
with their signature and no text, measured three ways — the transcript file,
--output-format stream-json, and the thinking_delta events under
--include-partial-messages, which arrive carrying zero characters. Interactive
sessions do record it, which is what makes the file look like it ought to. The
header says so where somebody would otherwise go looking for the option.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
"
